rhythm

1)How do you think,is rhythm so important for music?
There can be music without rhythm. With rhythm music becomes hypnotic and sensuous.

2)Where from rhythm is come?
It comes from heartbeat.

3)How can we call speed on Italian?

Tempo.

4)What is it "swing"?

Swing uses a strong rhythm section of double bass and drums as the anchor for a lead section of brass instruments such as trumpets and trombones, woodwinds including saxophones and clarinets, and sometimes stringed instruments such as violin and guitar, medium to fast tempos, and a "lilting" swing time rhythm

music

Part 1

In which way melody is like a language?
A melody can express our feelings. Even if we don't know the language, a melody helps us to communicate and understand each other. It's a kind of bridge between different cultures.

What is pentatonic? Why is it important? Comment in as many details as you can.

Pentatonic is 5 notes. They're easy to find on the piano keyboard, because these keys are black. Every melody is based on pentatonic, the genre doesn't matter. Even the riffs of famous bands are based on it.

make sure you understand what "notes" and "scale" are in music. What are the names of notes in English? (they are different then in Russian, so look this up, it's important for understanding the video)

The Eglish names of notes are: C (до), D (ре), E (ми), F (фа), G (соль), A (ля), H or B (си). There are also #  (sharp) and ♭ (flat). A sharp rises the note on its half-step, and a flat lowers on the same amount.

In the video, the notes in the scale are compared to runs in a ladder How many notes are there in Western scale? Is the number of notes the same in any culture?

There are 12 runs in a ladder in Western music. This number differs in different cultures. In Chinese and Indian music there are more notes in the ladder.

define and translate the term"pitch"

The pitch is the measure of how high or low the note is. Same notes can have a different pitch.

rt 2
define and translate the terms "interval", "semitone", "whole tone"

The interval is the distance between the runs which used to play on the musical ladder.
A semitone is the smallest interval between the one sound and another.
A whole tone is an interval of two runs of the musical ladder.

what's the essence of the experiment the presenter conducts? what does this experiment prove?

The presenter went to the splendid music place to find a music lover to help him construct the tune. The random people took a number, and than the presenter played the melody with these intervals.

why does the presenter compare music composing to story-telling?
He compares music composing to story-telling, because both in music and story-telling we need a template to begin, and the concept of note families is basic to us all, although different cultures had developed their own sets.

define and translate the term "mode"

Mode - тональность. Different modes express different emotions.

where do the names of modes come? How does the Aeolian mode sound like?

The ancient Greeks named modes like Aeolian, Dorian, Phrygian and Lydian. The Aeolian mode sound solemn.

define and translate the terms " to sharpen the note"" to flatten the note". What two very different groups of musicians were famous for doing so?

To sharpen the note means to make the note higher on the half-step, and to flattern the note means to make the note lower on the same amount.

Part 3
define and translate the term "diatonic"

Diatonic (диатоника) is a system, where all the instruments and all the singers can play together. The idea is to take one or two old notes and make them a pattern for the whole piece of music.
What is the difference between the new minor/major scales and the old modes? Why are they progressive in comparison with their predecessors?
Minor modes sound sad, major modes sound merry and joyful.

They are progressive because most of the instruments we have nowadays, e.g. flutes, trumpets etc, can only play in a certain mode and can only play a limited number of notes. Different instruments "speak different language" and they can "communicate" with each other or play together.

Part 4
how is a bigger musical piece (like Mendelssohn's Concerto) structured?

The first tone of the melody is presented in tis basic form. It is not overcomplicated. Than minor key can turn to the major. Some minutes later another melody interrupts the first. Its short and dramatic. By the end of the concerto the melody involves the variations, but we never hear it again so as simple as it was in the beginning.

Part 5
what is special about Sting's We Work The Blach Seam?
The dorian mode is the same as in songs of 16th century.  He associates ths sound with an industry, that have been around for centures. This songs has roots in very old songs.
name the ingredients of modern American music (which dominates the world, by the way)
African music, modern soul music, folk music, klezmer

the short story

here are the pics (voicethread)

He was an usual journalist and writer. He thought he'll end his life in poverty, writing dull articles for the local newspaper. But one day everything changed. He had a dream, and there were a plot of his new story
he decided to publish this story, because he knew, it will change the whole world. It will be the best story ever written. And he began to write....

But unfortunately, his neighbors began to reconstruct their flat. The noise was terrible. The man called the police, tried to ignore this dreadful noise, but he couldn't concentrate on his work.

He became very angry and tired. He ate nothing. He slept hardly two hours a day. And one day
he decided to talk with them.

He thought the neighbors will understand him, but they were extremely down-to-earth people and didn't understood how he could think of his novel, if they are reconstructing their flat. How could he hope in success! They were not interested in literature and their only hobby for about 5 years was watching TV. There were no art in the world, thought they. They were very narrow-minded, and he was a high flier.

The man was depressed and angry. There were no justice in the world. He wrote his novel, furious and offended. Word for word, chapter for chapter.

And one day he published it and became famous. His novel was read by all critics, and they said, he was a genius. He won a lot of awards and became rich.

So he bought a villa near the sea and forgot about the neighbors. And they were proud of themselves, because they finally finished the reconstruction.

art

I'd like to describe the picture "The Flowering Orchards" by Vincent Van Gogh (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY). The Flowering Orchards is a series of paintings executed by Vincent Van Gogh in Arles, in southern France, in the spring of 1888. Van Gogh arrived in Arles in February 1888 amid a snowstorm, within two weeks the weather changed and the fruit trees were in blossom. Appreciating the symbolism of rebirth, Van Gogh worked with optimism and zeal on about fourteen paintings of flowering trees in the early spring. He also made paintings of flowering trees in Saint-Remy in 1889. Flowering trees were special to Van Gogh. They represented awakening and hope. He enjoyed them aesthetically and found joy in painting flowering trees.
I like this work of art and a lot of other paintings by Van Gogh, because he painted nature of Europe, and I very like european nature. I think, we have common perception of european nature. This painting and the other paintings from this series are very colorful and realistic. This picture is an oil-painting.  The picture is painted in soft and delicate colours. Van Gogh managed to combine form and colour into harmonious unity. I think that this picture is lyrical and poetic in tone and atmosphere. It makes people think about spring, carelessness and renovation of the soul. There are a lot of green colours: grass green, leaf green, lime. Green symbolizes tranquility and refreshing. I very like this painting and a lot of others paintings by V. Van Gogh.

James Cameron task

1) James Cameron was a keen of since fiction, he had a lot of friends. I don't think, he was popular boy at school, because popular boys like rather parties and clubs, but not since fiction. Maybe I would like to have a friend like James C. if I liked the same things as he. Nevertheless, I think, he is an interesting person.
2) Sine fiction began to develop in 1960s, and it had a big influence on James C. As for me, I think, the time when I live influence me pretty much.
3) Maybe Cameron was interested in this, because drawing is a great possibility to express your feelings and imagination, and diving is a hobby for curious people, who like to discover something. As for me, I'm absoulutely indifferent to diving, but I liked to draw when I was younger. Now my hobbies are foreign languages (English, German and Spanish) and music.
4) I haven't seen neither the Abyss nor Terminator, because I don't like to watch movies at all. There are CG and ILM in these films.
5) To my mind, he likes both things. He liked these two things since his childhood. As for me, I like to imagine more.
6) The first thing is to respect the team you deal with, the second - to do what you want, without any limits. I totally agree with James Cameron.
